Across The Denali - Inside the Alaska Range
Across The Denali - Inside the Alaska RangeThere are places that transcend the forces of population or politics. In these treasured areas, we find refuge from ordinary and extraordinary problems of our world. Ever since September 11, 2001, when our American security was shattered forever, I found myself looking for a psychological reprieve in what I chose to paint - something closer to the heart. Pushing artistic boundaries could wait for another time.

Crossing the Denali Highway is a retreat in the truest sense; a gravel two-lane road winds it way through unending visual beauty: glaciers, wide valleys, eskers, and powerful rivers, not to mention the peaks of the Alaska Range. Few man-made sites interrupt your vision. Every two to three weeks, the vegetation or the snow cover on the lower mountains changes and a trip through is markedly altered. Going east to west is dramatically different than going in the reverse direction. Timeless, it affords that brief reprieve from the fears and travails of our present world.

The MacLaren Glacier painting, "Time Worn, Timeless" is more about things "remaining the same" over thousands of years. The other sites chosen were all about the urgency of time running out - it is autumn - and the need to enjoy this place in the moment.
